September Salmon

The rain and a drop in temperature certainly did the trick, with some fantastic salmon and sea trout coming out of, and importantly going back into the river. These are only the fish we see sent to us or on social media, so we expect there have been many more. The top fish we think, is 38 inches and approximate 20lb. It will be great to hear we are wrong.

Remember if you are salmon fishing you need your migratory fish EA license. The salmon season continues on the Kent until the end of October, however October is for members only. Please also be aware of the hook sizes you can use. This information can be found in your rules and regulations on-line here:

EA Suggesting Changes To Salmon & Sea Trout Fishing

You may have read in a recent news that the EA are proposing changes to salmon fishing rules in 2026. Local clubs have asked for your comments. You can click this link and go online and have your say and give your view.

Secret Salmon

The secret to great salmon fishing on the Kent is to get the right timing after a good rain, have the river at the perfect height and the water temperature at the right level. These finer details are still a secret, not to be published ☺. You can ask on email if you want!

Above the 38” salmon caught on the fly, plus other great fish, all returned

Members Growing – Junior Club Boom

We have seen significant growth in membership in 2025. These members are for all waters and age groups, however, the junior membership has boomed. Junior membership is now at over 80. This brings new anglers into the club, some of which are learning to fish. Any tips you can pass on as you meet them will be most welcome. Junior sales of EA licenses in the South Lakes area, are nearly 50% up year on year.

Clean River Kent Campaign Event – Helping Our River

The Clean River Kent Campaign are doing a fantastic job to put pressure on local government and United Utilities to improve the water quality. Please be aware of these 2 new dates to attend events held by the Clean River Kent team. You should be doing a river clean up every time you are out fishing, however you can now join the team on an official “River Clean Up”

  • A river Kent clean up – 20th September
  • Talk/Q&A regarding septic tanks/off-mains sewage management – 30th September

We work closely with all local groups, who hold the same values as our Club. Please check them out at cleanriverkent.co.uk to see what is going on with the campaign and join up to help if you can. It would be great for you to follow their activities and support them where you can. As you are all aware water pollution is a very sensitive issue. Should you see anything you feel isn’t right, please report it immediately. We work closely with United Utilities in the South Lakes and contrary to national option, they want to work with is to limit any issues.

Killington News

Killington’s secret of being one of the Northwest best fisheries, seems to be getting out. There have been some fantastic bags, mainly to feeder techniques, and waggler float fishing. It is a huge lake with plenty of space. Those wanting to fish the bays at the back of the lake can access it via the Killington Services Service Road, where there is parking on the road side and a stile to climb over the fence (its the road the police use to exit the service station, you can enter without going into the services). You may have bays and stretches all to yourself. You can even get out to fish the Island if the water level is low.

Killington Reservoir as a secret fishing location is spreading amongst the coarse fishing anglers of the Northwest, with record numbers buying membership and day tickets. We have had several international anglers visiting and most importantly enjoying the fishing. At £40 a year, it is a very accessible bargain for great all year fishing.

Pike Rules. October will see more pike angling on the reservoir. Please be aware of the pike fishing rules that have been added to the website information. It is most important all our pike anglers are aware of the equipment they need to ensure all fish are returned perfectly. If you are pike fishing, please be aware of the requirements.

Your Club

It is great to see many new anglers, young and old, joining KWAA and enjoying the great fishing we have. We have put a great deal of into improving our fishing and most importantly getting easy access to tickets and fishing, through the new website, and working closely with Carlson’s Tackle Shop, the EA, local groups and influencers to raise awareness of KWAA and fishing. We are one of the oldest fishing clubs in the country and are fast becoming one of the most progressive. Remember we are also a non-profit organisation, managed by volunteers, so all money raised goes back into the club.

The Rumour about your Club – Can you help?

The oldest fishing brand in the world started in Kendal and probably so did the oldest fishing club in world.

Hutchisons and Sons started in 1743 in Kendal. We have researched that the owners started the local fishing club on the river. A pound to a penny, it was the fore-runner of your club Kent Westmorland Angling Association (KWAA). If we can find more information it will help. It seems the original lures may not meet todays EA regulation! Any of you that may have an old Hutchinson Rod will be well rewarded, so we can document it for the future… We are not sure that rod would handle the 20lb salmon caught last week!
