KWAA Kent Season Closes

There have been some amazing fish this year for many members, with what looks like far more salmon caught than recent years and more specimen brown trout. Is this down to more salmon running, more people fishing, or better angling? It is impossible to know. One member, at the time of writing has had 20+ salmon this year and another to our knowledge at 10, so well done to them.

Knowing the river and getting the timing and techniques right seems to be the answer. There have been many notable browns with quite a few fish over 5lbs and one monster over 7! The even better news is that all these fish went back in perfect condition. Just remember to get you catch returns in!!!

Catch Returns

These are important for our club. We need to report the river catch returns to the EA. These are needed for any restocking we may wish to do for trout and importantly to monitor the salmon and sea trout numbers.

Please email these back to info@kentangling.co.uk.

EVEN IF YOU HAVE A ZERO RETURN YOU NEED TO SEND ONE. IT IS A REQUIREMENT FOR YOUR CLUB MEMBERSHIP!

Let us hope we don’t have to return to fining people for not handing in a catch return! This is still an option!

Killington News

Question… So, what is that weird thing in the middle of the picture above?

Answer… It’s the depth chart for Killington Reservoir, showing all the drop offs in the, hardly fished, areas around the water. Anyone wanting a better copy of the depth map, (not good copy by the way), please email info@kentangling.co.uk and we will email you it back. Pikers should be interested at the bottom of the island (yes that’s the island)

The recent Carlson’s competition on Killington, with a winning bag over 10lbs, confirmed the lake continues to improve. It is fast becoming a go to fishing location for many North West anglers. There have been some fantastic bags, mainly to feeder techniques, and waggler float fishing. It is a huge lake with plenty of space to explore.

Pike Rules. October will see more pike angling on the reservoir. Please be aware of the pike fishing rules that have been added to the website information. It is most important all our pike anglers are aware of the equipment they need to ensure all fish are returned perfectly. If you are pike fishing, please be aware of the requirements. Ignorance is not a defence. We need to look after our fish!

AGM 2025 Wednesday 3rd December

We would love as many members to attend as possible. Afterall it is your club, and you can and should contribute to our future. The AGM will be held at Kendal Town Hall, start time to be agreed soon. We expect representation from the EA to update us on their news and discuss any changes to fishing regulations. Any junior members wanting to attend must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (who does not need to be a member of KWAA).

Improved Kent Fishing Map

We are working to have a far better fishing, and parking map, for our river Kent sections. Above the original map and the work in progress map of our river and key swims. Finally, we will all know what we are talking about when we fish Blue Bell or Masons Corner! We may even know where to park as well ☺

We have put a great deal into improving our fishing and most importantly getting easy access to tickets and fishing, through the new website, and working closely with Carlson’s Tackle Shop, the EA, local groups and influencers to raise awareness of KWAA and fishing. We are one of the oldest fishing clubs in the country and are fast becoming one of the most progressive. Remember we are also a non-profit organisation, managed by volunteers, so all money raised goes back into the club.

How old is your Club – Can you help?

We are still on the case researching the club. Ideally finding links to the Kendal fishhook making business that started in 1745, with a factory based in Stramongate, Kendal. It is said they started a fishing club on the river, however we need some proof! The poster was to promote train travel to the area. Hard to see, however it declares Kendal as GREAT FISHING (Left side). Good to see that is still the case today, however now, I’m sure more fish go back!

Above right, turned up in the archive from 1848. It’s the amount Kent Angling paid the local police and solicitors to control and prosecute poaching on the river. It even names the cost per poacher and poacher! Lucky that today our bailiffs are all unpaid volunteers… We do still prosecute any poachers, so no change there!

The Handbook
